Proper Exercise

Proper Exercise

If you are looking for a good exercise program what are some things to look for?

  1. Something you enjoy
  2. Correct form
  3. Appropriate intensity
  4. Variety
  5. Exercise with others

In the end, just move as much as you can EVERY DAY

The latest recommendations (2018) from the American College of Sports Medicine are essentially the same as they were back in 1995.

Consequences of improper exercise

My friend Logan Barnes went for several years with severe pain in his left hip, but did nothing about it. He experienced pain past 90 degrees. “I felt like I wanted to scream all the time, but I didn’t say anything and just grit my teeth,” he says. When he was 22 years old, after too much pain to handle, he visited the doctor to receive a diagnosis. It turned out to be a pincer-cam labral tear. It makes sense why. When Logan was 14 years old he was an impressive weight lifter. He could squat 485 lbs and bench press 250 lbs (nearly double his own weight). One of the body's responses to weight lifting is bone growth. This is known as Wolff's law. Unfortunately, he lifted so much at such a young age that, according to the doc, the femur grew so thick there was not enough room for the labrum.

During hip surgery, the surgeon took a high-speed drill to his left hip bone and reshaped it. The right hip also has a tear but no pain. The surgeon said that if Logan had to get surgery on one side, he would likely need it on the other. However, most people have labral tears and experience no pain. Torn labrums are very common especially in athletes like hockey players. Inverted knees place the hips in an improper position. This surgeon said there is no reason to get surgery if there is no pain.

What's the lesson we learn from this? There is a limit to strength training in kids. See more from the Mayo Clinic here.
